Yuck!

Hey! My brief is to keep you up to speed on all aspects of India, right? So this bizarre desire to flush freebies down the loos on Air India is therefore all part and parcel of your being-up-to-speed.

 

If anyone (anyone?? please ??) can tell me why you would flush a pillow down a loo, I would be delighted to hear from you…I thought people simply stole things from planes, but clearly not.

Why do women not wear crash helmets in India ?

Because the law permits it, that’s why.

I had blogged about this in October last year – if you click on this link, it will take you to my earlier post. There was some follow-up in this morning’s papers, which doesn’t change the status quo at all.

Women and Sikhs are exempted from wearing a helmet. By law.

And here’s the view of the “Economic Times” :

I suppose I can understand the practicality angle for Sikhs – how do you get a helmet on over a turban ?

Why do some banks in India make entry so difficult ? Literally

Every time I go into my local branch of Syndicate Bank in south Delhi, I get irritated by the grilles that are always partly pulled out and fastened with a chain, making entry difficult.

ICICI (a private bank) slap bang next door has nothing like this.

State Bank of India on the other side, also a nationalised bank, has similar grilles.

According to my hubby, who should know, since he is a retired banker, the country’s nationalised banks are required to have these grilles for security reasons. I tried google-ing it, but without any joy.

Why do Indian drivers fold in their wing mirrors ? While driving, that is

Well, just think about it for a moment. Why would you leave your wing mirrors sticking out when (a) you don’t need them and (b) if you don’t fold them in, they will almost certainly got knocked off by another car squeezing past ?

Parking is so limited in Delhi, roads are so ridiculously over-crowded, that every millimetre of road space is precious. And so wing mirrors are often the first things to get knocked, scratched, banged as scooters weave their way through stationary traffic.
