Let me describe the scene as I blog.
6 of us are spending the night in a forest rest hut inside Kaziranga National Park, because our lodge, Wildgrass, is fully booked for tonight and tomorrow. The hut is very rustic, doesn’t have electricity, but does have a view of the Brahmaputra river, and is currently surrounded by a large herd of elephant, who are trumpeting away in the dark. The rangers are shouting and making a racket, to discourage the eles from coming through the camp and down to the river to drink.
I am blogging by candlelight, Noni is downloading her pictures, and we are all crunching our way through plates of namkeens.
I won’t blog for too long because Himmat’s laptop battery is slowly dying, and can’t be charged - no electricity, remember, and we are here for 2 nights.
The Really Big News from a stupendous day’s game watching is that we saw the most wonderful tiger this evening. A gorgeous young male, sitting on the bank of the river, in lovely evening light. It was a long sighting - 15 to 20 minutes, and he ended the show by crossing the river, obligingly jumping in the water for us.
What else ?
Otters.
Elephants.
And a running total of 189 rhino in 2 days.
Photos will follow, I promise, but probably only when I get back to Delhi – which seems more than a world away.
