It’s been another really hot day, and the mercury is only going to rise. (That’s Indian-speak for it’s going to get hotter).
Sometimes, I wonder if I am slowly losing my linguistic bearings – you wouldn’t talk about the rising mercury in Blighty, would you ? Well, not that hot weather is ever a factor of life there, I admit. But you wouldn’t. Would you ?

There are days when you just want to shake your head in despair, and sadly today is one of them.
Yesterday, I blogged at length about the village panchayats in Haryana, and their medieval mindset.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but they are largely Hindu (and possibly Sikh ?). So, seemingly not to be outdone, a Muslim organisation in Lucknow has just come out with a fatwa against women working.
What on earth is happening ? Is it fear ? Desperation ?

OK, so let me get the weather bulletin out of the way first.
It’s confusingly hot here in Delhi.
See what the front page of the venerable Times of India said, and you will see why I’m confused :
Suffice it to say that it’s been a day to stay indoors, which we did. And to pray that the electricity doesn’t conk out too often. So far, not so bad.

So there we are, then. It was 44 degrees today in Delhi.
This is what the papers said this morning, and for once they were spot on.
It could, and it did.
OK, OK, it was 43.6 if you believe one news bulletin, 44 if you believe another, (same channel, by the way) but at this stage of the game, 0.4 of a degree is almost irrelevant. Rajan called by this afternoon, and said his car thermometer showed 45 degrees. Carine also phoned around lunchtime with the same statistic.
