Disturbing news from Bangalore

Reports are surfacing in the last couple of hours that New Year’s Eve in Bangalore, supposedly one of the most cosmopolitan cities in India, witnessed gangs of drunks molesting and groping women.

At the risk of sounding wimpy, I’m only going to touch on this horror story for now, until we get more details.

But the thought of yet more sordid stories of sexual harassment is just so depressing…and how terrifying must this news be for the millions of young women who live and work in a city known for its IT culture – which one imagines means better educated, more liberal.

Such a foul way to usher in a new year.

When in God’s name is this country going to get to grips with the culture that allows men to think they can molest women?

As usual, the powers that be seem to be inept.  Here is the state’s Home Minister G Parameshwara, who reportedly said there were enough policemen and women in Bengaluru to ensure safety, offering no apology for the incident.

Listen to what he said:

“You should also understand the entire culture of celebration of the New Year’s thing over the years.”

What does this even mean?

…”the entire culture of celebration of the New Year’s thing over the years…”

Is Mr. Parameshwara condemning or accepting the drunken sexual attacks as the “entire culture” of “the New Year’s thing”?

I refer you to the following reports, which I consulted:

Sorry, folks.

Hate to start a new year in this vein, but the truth cannot be glossed over, with the aim of painting a rosier picture of a country that is, indeed, often fabulous, but also, unfortunately, one which has a dark side.
