As in NO idea why anyone would choose to take a dip in glacial water, at altitude, in the Himalayas, in the winter, in temperatures of -15C…but hey, there’s no accounting for taste.
I have just returned from the Chadar, an amazing trek along the frozen river Zanskar in Ladakh, in the Indian Himalayas.
As if the trek itself, and the snowy weather aren’t harsh enough, some people choose to take a dip in those bits of the river Zanskar that aren’t covered with thick sheet ice.
Please note that the local Ladakhi porters are fully clothed (though nowhere as warmly clad as we all were, I might add) while the tourists strip off and jump in that fr-fr-freezing water…
And yes, that is indeed ice floating down the river.
Crazy, crazy stuff.
But since the lovely, hard-working porters are clearly enjoying the show, it’s all for the good.
