Losar-la Tashi Delek! Happy Tibetan New Year!

Happy Losar to you all.

As I explained in my most recent blog, Losar is the Tibetan New Year, and yesterday, by a stroke of amazingly good timing, we arrived at Namdroling Monastery just in time to witness a ceremony marking the end of the year.

I shared a short clip with you yesterday of the monks praying, and I thought I’d celebrate Losar by sharing a few more photos here.

Despite the heat of south india, there is an astonishing feeling of familiarity as you explore the large monastic compound. The architecture, the cool interiors, the sounds, the music, the bustling, polite monks – it’s all redolent of the mountains.

The monastery is cool and serene
This table of offerings (above) was to be dismantled yesterday afternoon, symbolising the end of a year
Rows of monks chanting, while others delivering refreshments
Intricate wall paintings

And then this…the chanting and drumming were spine-tingling and goosebumps-y. There was such a dignified, orderly mood, with visitors like us welcome, but in no way were we allowed to distract from their focus.
